Grok Tesla commands: what works, what does not, and the personalities
The official list of things Grok can do in your Tesla, example phrases, what community testers found, and how the personalities work.
Officially, Grok in a Tesla can navigate (multi-stop), make calls, play music, adjust temperature, open the glovebox and answer questions about the car, in the Assistant personality. In August 2026 testing, about 68% of 170 commands worked; trunk, frunk and volume did not.
What Tesla officially lists
Tesla’s support page says Grok can:
- Navigate to places and plan trips with several stops
- Make phone calls
- Search for and play music
- Adjust the temperature
- Open the glovebox
- Answer questions about your Tesla
These car commands only work with the Assistant personality selected.

What community testing found
In late August 2026, Drive Tesla Canada tried 170 spoken commands and about 116 worked (roughly 68%). Beyond the official list, they found working commands for Dog, Camp and Bioweapon Defense modes, seat and wheel heating, folding mirrors, saving a Dashcam clip, Sentry Mode, the charge port, wipers, tire pressure, the odometer and release notes. Opening the trunk or frunk and changing the volume did not work in their tests. Expect this to change with each update.
Personalities
Tesla describes Grok personalities as ranging “from Storyteller to Unhinged”. Reported options include Assistant, Storyteller, Unhinged, Therapist and Argumentative, and firmware has shown others such as kids’ stories, trivia, meditation, motivation and a language tutor. Which ones appear depends on your country, and some are not suitable for children, so check before handing the screen to the back seat.
What it cannot do
- Drive the car or control Autopilot or FSD
- Work in Intel Atom cars
- Run car commands in personalities other than Assistant
- Send text messages yet (Tesla has said this is planned, with no date)

Can Grok open my Tesla trunk?
Not in August 2026 community testing. Trunk, frunk and volume commands did not work then.
Why does Grok ignore my car commands?
Car commands only work with the Assistant personality. Switch to Assistant and try again.
Can Grok send texts from my Tesla?
Not yet. Tesla has said messaging through Grok is planned, without a date.
