Which Claude model is the flagship?

Claude’s lineup is easy to misread. Anthropic calls Claude Fable 5.1, released September 1, 2026, its “most capable generally available model”. It is pitched for long agent jobs that run for hours or days, codebase-wide coding and enterprise research. It is also the most expensive Claude model, at $10 / $50 per million tokens.

Claude Opus 5.5 arrived three weeks later, on September 22, 2026. Anthropic says it performs near Fable 5.1 on most tasks and costs about 40% less to run than Opus 5. Opus 5.5 is the main model on the Pro plan, and it is the one at the top of the independent leaderboards. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index it scores 58, against 53 for Fable 5.1, as of October 15-18, 2026.

The fair summary: Fable 5.1 is Anthropic’s top-tier model by its own description, while Opus 5.5 is its newest and best-value frontier model. On Pro, Fable is available only through pay-as-you-go usage credits. Max includes it, capped at 50% of weekly limits. Grok’s side is simpler. Grok 4.7 is SpaceXSI’s latest model, and models from Grok 4.5 onward are co-developed with Cursor.

Where Grok tends to win

  • Price per token. Grok 4.7 costs $2 / $6 per million tokens. Opus 5.5 costs $4 / $20, so Grok’s output tokens cost less than a third as much. One caveat: Artificial Analysis found Grok 4.7 very verbose. It used 240 million tokens to run the Index, against an 85 million median, which narrows the gap per finished task.
  • Entry price and the bundle. Grok’s paid plans start at $8 with Plus, versus $20 for Claude Pro. Since October 2026, Grok plans are sold as The X Subscription. It bundles Grok, Cursor (the AI code editor SpaceX bought in August 2026) and X Premium perks such as the checkmark and fewer ads. Plus also includes Grok API access. Our free vs paid Grok guide has the details.
  • Real-time X data. Grok is built into X through the Grok tab, and it can search X posts. Developers can buy the same X Search tool through the API at $5 per 1,000 posts. Claude offers general web search on every plan.
  • Images and video. Grok makes images and short videos through Grok Imagine, and Premium ($30) adds AI image and video creation. Claude does not generate photos, illustrations or video. It builds diagrams, charts and interactive visuals with HTML and SVG, and it can analyze images you upload.
  • An always-on agent at $30. Grok Bot is included from Premium at $30. Each user’s bots run on a cloud Linux computer, so work keeps going while the laptop is off. Claude’s agent tools start lower, at $20 on Pro. Cowork, its agent for multi-step work, is available on the macOS desktop app, while web and mobile are still rolling out.

Where Claude tends to win

  • Independent leaderboards. As of October 15-18, 2026, Opus 5.5 is #1 of 217 models on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with 58 points, 12 ahead of Grok 4.7. On the Arena Text board dated October 15, 2026, Opus 5.5 ranks #3 and Fable 5.1 #6, while Grok 4.7 ranks #89.
  • Coding and agent benchmarks. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Grok 4.7 with Grok Build placed 4th, behind Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5 (reported September 21, 2026). Anthropic reports 66.4% for Opus 5.5 on Terminal-Bench 4.0 and 81.8% on the OSWorld 2.1 computer-use test. TokenPost reported on October 16, 2026 that Opus 5.5 is #1 on Arena’s agent ranking.
  • Context window. Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 handle 1 million tokens, according to Artificial Analysis, double Grok 4.7’s 500K. A context window is how much text a model can consider at once.
  • Safety posture. Safety is central to Anthropic’s brand. It says Opus 5.5 scored best of any model on its automated behavioral audit and resists prompt injection better than Opus 5. Anthropic also refused to drop its limits on mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, after which the Defense Department labelled it a supply-chain risk in February 2026. A federal judge temporarily blocked that label in March. Grok’s record is rougher: the 2025-2026 deepfake scandal led Malaysia and Indonesia to block Grok and the EU to open a probe, and Common Sense Media rated Grok not safe for teens in January 2026.

Trade-offs on both sides

Neither service is a clean win. A few points to weigh before paying:

  • Grok is slow to start. Artificial Analysis measured Grok 4.7’s time to first token at about 53 seconds, against a 3.9-second median.
  • Grok Build had a data incident. In July 2026 a researcher reported that Grok Build uploaded users’ full repositories, secrets included, to cloud storage. The company disabled this the same day and released Grok Build as open source two days later.
  • Claude has tighter guardrails. Users complained in April 2026 that Opus 4.7 refused too often. Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 send flagged cybersecurity requests to the older Opus 4.8, and Fable keeps data for 30 days by default for safety monitoring.
  • Usage caps on both. Claude’s limits are a recurring friction, and Cowork uses them up faster than chat. Grok’s paid plans share one weekly usage pool across the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X and Cursor.

Which to pick by user type

  • Heavy X users and creators: Grok. Plus at $8 bundles Grok with X perks, and Premium adds image and video creation.
  • Professional developers: Claude leads the coding benchmarks above, and Pro at $20 includes Claude Code. Grok is worth a look for people who already want Cursor, since The X Subscription includes it.
  • Budget API builders: Grok 4.7 is cheaper per token than Opus 5.5. For simple, high-volume jobs, Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 / $0.50 for prompts up to 100K tokens.
  • Office and research work: Claude Pro adds Research, Claude for Microsoft 365 and Cowork for multi-step tasks across files and apps.
  • Hands-off automation: Grok Bot on Premium runs in the cloud while you are away. Claude’s Cowork can run scheduled daily, weekly or monthly tasks unattended.
  • Families and safety-focused teams: weigh Anthropic’s safety focus against Grok’s January 2026 teen-safety rating.
GrokMag view: On the evidence as of October 18, 2026, Claude leads on independent benchmarks, while Grok leads on price, bundling and media creation. Leaderboards change weekly, so check the dates. For OpenAI’s side, see Grok vs ChatGPT.
