How to enable Grok in your Tesla (and why it may not show up)
Four checks to get Grok working in your car, how to open it, and the fixes when it does not appear.
Check that your car has the AMD Ryzen computer (Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information), update to 2025.26 or newer, connect to Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi, then open Grok from the App Launcher, hold the wheel’s voice button or say “Hey Grok”.
Step 1: check your car’s computer
On the touchscreen, go to Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. If the infotainment processor says AMD Ryzen, your car can run Grok. If it says Intel Atom, it cannot, as of October 2026. Most Teslas built from late 2021 onward have the AMD computer.
Step 2: update the software
Grok needs software 2025.26 or newer. Some countries got it in later versions (for example 2026.20 in Japan and parts of Southeast Asia, and 2026.32.6 for the Middle East). Connectors and Grok Bot in the car need 2026.26 or newer. Check for updates under Controls > Software.
Step 3: make sure the car is online
Grok needs either Premium Connectivity (Tesla’s paid data plan) or a stable Wi-Fi connection. On standard connectivity with no Wi-Fi, it will not work.
Step 4: open Grok
- Tap the App Launcher and choose Grok, or
- Press and hold the voice button on the steering wheel, or
- Say “Hey Grok” after turning on voice activation under Controls > Audio > Grok Settings.
Say “bye” or “goodbye” to end a session. You can use basic Grok without signing in, with limits. Sign in to your Grok account for more use and for connectors.
Grok not showing up? The usual reasons
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Intel Atom computer | No fix today. Tesla has not announced Grok for Intel cars. |
| Old software | Install 2025.26 or later (or your region’s required version). |
| No Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi | Connect to Wi-Fi or subscribe to Premium Connectivity. |
| Your country is not supported | Check the country list. China does not get Grok. |
| Phased rollout | Tesla releases updates in waves; your car may simply not have it yet. |
Tips once it works
- Use the Assistant personality if you want navigation and car commands; other personalities only chat.
- Turn on Share precise location if you want better nearby results; leave it off if you prefer approximate location.
- Set up email and calendar connectors from the Grok app on your phone, not the touchscreen.
