Grok Voice: how to talk to Grok, where it works and what it costs
Grok’s voice mode explained: where you can use it (app, Tesla, Grok Bot, API), what it can do, whether it is free, and what to watch out for.
Grok Voice lets you talk to Grok out loud in real time. Use it in the Grok app (tap the voice icon), on grok.com, in Tesla cars (“Hey Grok”), in Grok Bot, or through the developer API. It is free with limits and included in every paid plan. The latest model is Grok Voice 3.0 (October 14, 2026).
What Grok Voice is
Grok Voice is the spoken side of Grok: you talk, it talks back, in real time. It arrived in the Grok app in February 2025 alongside Grok 3, and since then the same voice technology has spread to Tesla cars, Grok Bot and a paid developer API. The newest speech model, Grok Voice 3.0, was released on October 14, 2026.

What voice mode can do
- Natural conversation you can interrupt, with several voices and personalities to choose from (see voices and personalities).
- Camera vision: since April 2025 you can point your phone camera at something and ask about it.
- Real-time search of the web and X while you talk.
- Several languages, though some voices and personalities are English-only.
Is Grok Voice free?
Voice is available on the free tier with limits, and every paid X Subscription plan includes it, drawing from the same weekly usage pool as your chats. Things to know
- Some personalities are adult. Unhinged and Sexy modes drew criticism at launch for swearing and sexual roleplay. Common Sense Media rated Grok “not safe for teens” in January 2026.
- Voice cloning exists for developers. Since May 2026 the API can make custom voices from about a minute of speech, with a consent check. Critics note no independent testing of that check has been published.
- It can still be wrong. Spoken answers sound confident; check important facts.
