Short answer

Grok 5 is not out and has no official release date as of October 19, 2026. Musk says it will come within 2026, after Grok 4.8 and 4.9. Today’s newest model is Grok 4.7 (September 21, 2026), and Grok 4.8 is still in training.

Where Grok 5 stands on October 19, 2026

Grok 5 is not released, and SpaceXSI (formerly xAI) has not given an official date. The company’s news page lists no Grok 5 or Grok 4.8 announcement. Its most recent posts are Grok Voice 3.0 on October 14 and The X Subscription on October 12. The newest model you can actually use is Grok 4.7, released September 21, 2026.

What exists instead is a long trail of promises from Elon Musk, a few reported facts about training, and a lot of rumor. This page sorts them, so you can tell which is which.

Seen “Grok 5 previews” on X? Some AI-generated summaries on X describe October 2026 “Grok 5 previews” with more memory, faster reasoning and better multimodal skills. We found no such preview on SpaceXSI’s news page or in its developer docs as of October 19, 2026. Treat it as unconfirmed until SpaceXSI posts it.

The road to Grok 5

Musk has said the order is 4.7, then 4.8, then 4.9, then Grok 5. Two steps are done.

Grok 4.8 is the next thing to watch. On September 13 and 14, 2026, Musk said it was finishing its main training run on a new in-house C++ training stack. “grok-4.8” then appeared in the model picker of SpaceXSI’s public Grok Build code on September 29. Prediction markets are cautious: on Polymarket, the next Grok model (4.8 or later) was priced at 13% for release by October 31 and 50% by November 30, as of October 19. The pattern matters more than any single date. Grok 4.7 alone missed several promised windows before it shipped. Plan around what is released, not around what is announced.

For scale: Musk has described Grok 4.7 as about 2.1 trillion parameters and Grok 4.8 as about 2.5 trillion. Those numbers are his, not published specs. See the glossary if terms like tokens or context window are new to you.

The AGI claim

Musk has tied Grok 5 to artificial general intelligence for a year. In late 2025 he gave it about a 10% chance of reaching AGI. On September 14, 2026, asked how close Grok 4.8 would get, he answered: “That will be Grok 5.” He added a hedge in the same thread: “We shall see.”

No definition, benchmark or independent test sits behind the claim. The same day, as BigGo Finance reported, Musk publicly endorsed an essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calling for frontier AI to be paced and independently evaluated. Read the AGI talk as a goal, and judge Grok 5 by what it does once it ships.

Should you wait for Grok 5?

For most people, no. Waiting for a model with no date means waiting indefinitely.

Ignore screenshots and summaries. These are the signals that have come before every real Grok launch:

  • An announcement post on SpaceXSI’s news page.
  • A grok-5 model name with a price in the developer docs.
  • The model showing up in the Grok app’s model picker.
  • Early hints in SpaceXSI’s public code, as happened with Grok 4.8 on September 29.

When is Grok 5 coming out?

There is no official date. On an August 5, 2026 call Musk said it would come within 2026, and in September he said Grok 4.8 and 4.9 come first. As of October 19, 2026, Grok 4.8 is not out yet.
